Varna Free University

Chernorizets Hrabar Free University of Varna was established in 1991.
On 21 July 1995, by resolution of the 37th National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria, the University was officially granted the status of Higher Education Institution. The University provides full-time and part-time education in all academic degrees regulated by the Bulgarian Act on Higher Education, i.e. BA, MA, and PhD.

In 2001, the University was granted its first institutional accreditation for a five-year period. On 27 July 2006, Chernorizets Hrabar Free University of Varna was granted its second institutional accreditation by the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency for a six-year period, deserving the highest of all marks, "Very Good".

Today, the University is well-renowned as a major academic and research centre, teaching Bulgarian and international students in nationally significant academic fields, guaranteeing a globally competitive academic and research product. Currently, the University provides education for over 12 thousand students in 67 B.A. and M.A. programmes, as well as in 20 accredited PhD specialities.
The Bulgarian Black Sea Capital’s youngest university is a dependable partner preferred by any academic institution in Europe, the USA and Asia.

Among VFU’s well-established academic traditions are the exchange programmes and partnerships with numerous offshore universities and institutes.
The University is among the initiators and most active members of the Black Sea University Network.

VFU’s lecturers and students take an ever more significant part in diverse international projects, such as Tempus, Erasmus, Leonardo, and other research and education dedicated programmes funded by the EU.
VFU’s long-term partners, which include numerous research, economic and business organisations, are always ready to provide their facilities for the practical training of our students and applied scientific needs of our lecturers, and above all,
with regard to our active involvement in different national and international public projects, in response to the challenges of an ever-globalising information society

Varna Free University is the only Bulgarian university to have been awarded an ECTS and a DS Label, the education provided by it being recognised everywhere in Europe.

All these characteristics make Varna Free University an integral part of the European and global education space.

Departments:

Department of International Ecnomics and Politics
The founding of the Department of Economics took place in 1995, coinciding with the establishment of the Speciality of Economics, by Resolution of the Faculty Council at the then-existing Faculty of Management, dated 30 March 1995, following a Paper by Professor Minko Minkov.

Department of Administration and Management:

The Department of Administration and Management is a VFU body within the structure of the Faculty of International Economics and Administration. The Department provides instruction for some 2300 BA students. The Department is a member of prestigious international organisations, such as: NISPAcee, IASIA and EPAN.

Department of Computer Studies:

The Department maintains a close partnership with practitioners from the IT field, having signed framework agreements for joint scientific research with a number of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Institutes, as well as with business partners, such as Sirma Group, etc.

Faculty of Law :

In today’s global risk society issues related to the security of our world, countries, cities, and districts, as well as to safe conditions of labour, entertainment and respite see universities grappling with the challenges of training a new type of specialists, possessing the ability and skill to dependably protect citizens, society and the state.
Higher education in the field of security is without alternative. Varna Free University is the first Bulgarian university that has initiated, and is steadily sustaining the successful development of the specialities instructing students in the fields of national and international corporate security, and disaster and emergency protection.

Department of Legal Sciences:

The Legal Sciences Department has been operating as a part of the Faculty of Law since the 2007/2008 academic year, providing instruction for all our law students. The speciality was established as a part of "Administrative and Political Sciences" in the year Varna Free University was founded, while later it became a part of the Faculty of Law.

Department of Security and Safety:

Instruction in the specialities forming the professional field of National Security commenced in September 2005 by Resolution of the Academic Council of Varna Free University.
Instruction in all specialities is delivered at the Department of Security and Safety at the Faculty of Law.

Department of Psychology
Instruction at the Department of Psychology is based on academic curriculums worked out in full compliance with the requirements of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ЕCTS), and provides access to high-quality education in accordance with the European criteria and standards in the field.

Faculty of Architecture:

The Faculty of Architecture was founded by VFU back in 1995, originating from the Faculty of Maritime and Building Sciences and the Academic and Scientific Complex of Technical Sciences.
Architecture and building education in Varna can be traced back to as early as 1947, when the State University of Varna was founded, providing education for future architects and construction engineers until 1953.
Apart from face-to-face teaching, our tutors are dedicated to assisting students in participating in many competitions, plenary sessions, creative workshops, seminars and conferences, where these young people have a ground for realization of their research interests.
In cooperation with the Palace of Balchik, our Faculty holds an annual Palace Festival of Flowers and an International Student Architectural Contest and Workshop, hosted by the Town of Balchik.
Besides, the Faculty has been holding workshops like "Landscape Design for Varna’s Coastal Area" and "Environment-Friendly Architecture - a Possible Architecture", both events being directed by professors from the Venice University of Architecture,
Italy, providing our students the opportunity to attend placements and practical sessions in Italy and Germany, and study at a European university for 1 semester.

Departments :

Department of Architecture and Urban Studies
The speciality of Architecture enjoys great interest from applicants.
Mainly evinced by young people from Northeast and Southeast Bulgaria. However, there are applicants from Central and Western Bulgaria as well.

Construction of Buildings and Facilities Department
The Department boasts a number of prominent scholars in the field of building sciences, including Professor Venkov, Professor Darakchiev, Professor Ignatiev, Professor Tanev, Professor Etimov, Professor Staykov, Professor Daalov, Assoc. Prof. Bobev, etc.

Department of Art
The Department boasts creative student collectives, including an academic dance theatre comprised of two groups: a folklore ensemble and a modern choreography ballet group, performing a large set of art and concert shows in Bulgaria and abroad. Students from the Fine Arts specialities regularly hold fashion shows, exhibitions and plenary sessions.

Smolyan Branch:

The Varna Free University Smolyan Branch is dedicated to the cultural, intellectual and socio-economic development of the Rhodopes pursued by means of higher and short-term education, as well as scholarly and applied project research on the current and future socio-economic issues in the region.
